The Refreshments are... (or better yet, was) A alternative rock band from Tempe, AZ formed in 1993 by: Roger Clyne, Dusty Denham, Brian Blush and Arthur "Buddy' Edwards They had to get a name, firstly of course So, they came up with the name: All you can eat? That's not right. Yes, The Refreshments started as All You Can Eat and kept gigging that way Until they found out that a San Diego band with the name All You Can Eat was gigging too So they went back to the table and as to quote Roger in their MTV 120 minutes interview " We needed a name fast we were already gigging under a name called All You Can Eat and there was already a San Diego band called All You Can Eat and The Refreshments seemed to just fit the music it sounded like a 50s rock band that slipped through the cracks and it was a winner At the time, so we went with it, and here we are, we have to live with it now." And a little trivia moment, the Refreshments' first show was on January 29, 1994 at Long Wongs in Tempe, AZ And spring through summer they kept gigging as the Refreshments but somewhere before October They found out that ticketmaster was holding a 10,000 dollar sweepstakes for newcoming bands with a finals in Los Angeles So promptly, Roger, Dusty, Buddy and Brian hopped on the opportunity And they won! And after winning the 10,000 dollar prize, they hopped into the label and began recording their debut album, and no, it's not Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy, well, it is, but a primitive version called "Wheelie" it's just about the same as FFBB except it has a track called Psychosis (which FFBB doesn't have) and it's missing two tracks that were on FFBB, (Blue Collar Suicide & Interstate) and what became Mexico was originally titled B.O.B.A. (Buffet on Bad Acid) And after finishing recording, they released it on December 4, 1994 and locally it was a hit (it was only ever sold locally) with all 2000 or 5000 (amount varies on sources) selling out EXTREMELY fast, and with the increased popularity of Wheelie it was bound to get them attraction outside of AZ even if it was only sold locally, which got them a spot at SXSW (South by Southwest) in 1995, where they had to play at the Steamboat and follow The Presidents of the United States of America (really long name, i know) And they did their best and inevitably their best got them a signing with Mercury Records who had them begin recording their first SIGNED album, Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy, which would be released on February 27, 1996 to slow reception but the first single came to a coin toss, to either be Banditos or Blue Collar Suicide and thankfully the coin led them right because when Banditos came out, it EXPLODED.
Quickly, The Refreshments made a music video for it and it started playing everywhere, but they had to go on tour to promote their new record, so they joined The Gin Blossoms, Dead Hot Workshop, Dishwalla and Tonic (band lineup varies on select dates) in a cross-country tour which started March 4, 1996 in San Jose, CA and ended November 25 in Omaha, NE
